Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo
Old N-340 between Maro (Nerja) and Cerro Gordo (Almuñécar); viewpoint at Torre de Maro, Nerja
About Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo
Between Maro and the Granada border the mountains drop straight into the sea in a protected strip of 1,913 hectares, declared a natural site in 1989 and extending one nautical mile offshore. Sheer cliffs alternate with coves such as Maro, Las Alberquillas, El Cañuelo and, just over the provincial line, Cantarriján, reached by steep paths or by kayak from Burriana. Watchtowers, seagrass meadows, chameleons and peregrines are part of the scene. The old N-340 has viewpoints at Cerro Gordo and above Maro; in summer some coves are car-free with shuttle access.
