Nerja sits about an hour east of Málaga where the Sierra Almijara meets the sea. Its whitewashed center opens onto the Balcón de Europa, a seafront promontory above small coves, and the town is the gateway to Maro and the protected Maro-Cerro Gordo cliffs. It is quieter and more Spanish in feel than the western resorts.
