Weekend Traffic Guide: Beating the Coastal Rush
Friday evening westbound and Sunday evening eastbound are the two windows to avoid. Here is how to plan around them, and the alternatives when the coast road stalls.
The coast road between Málaga and Estepona carries most of the region's weekend traffic, and the pattern is predictable: westbound from 17:00 to 20:00 on Fridays and eastbound from 18:00 to 21:00 on Sundays.
How to avoid the worst of it
- Leave the airport before 16:00 or after 20:30 on a Friday.
- Use the toll motorway between Fuengirola and Estepona; it adds a modest fee and typically saves twenty minutes at peak.
- For Puerto Banús on a Saturday night, park at the edge of Nueva Andalucía and walk or take a taxi for the last kilometre.
Live information
The national traffic authority publishes live incident maps and camera feeds; our traffic page summarises them for the coast each morning.
A note on roadworks
Rolling resurfacing works between San Pedro and Estepona continue overnight on weekdays, with single-lane running after 22:00.
