Frigiliana Old Town (Barribarto)

Frigiliana's upper village, the Barribarto, is a steep tangle of whitewashed lanes, stairways and passages dating from Nasrid times, with ceramic plaques recounting the 1569 Morisco uprising that ended at the castle ruins on the hilltop. The lower town has an old sugar-cane factory still producing molasses, an archaeology museum in the Casa del Apero and plenty of restaurants with terrace views toward the sea. Visit midweek or outside the Festival de las 3 Culturas in late August if you want the lanes to yourself; parking is at the entrance to the village.
