Why Remote Workers Are Choosing the Coast: The Coworking Boom

From Málaga's tech district to beachside workspaces in Marbella, the coast is building an infrastructure for people who work anywhere.

Why Remote Workers Are Choosing the Coast: The Coworking Boom

Ten years ago a laptop worker on the Costa del Sol had the choice of a café or a kitchen table. Today the coast counts dozens of coworking spaces, from converted warehouses in Málaga's Soho to garden workspaces in Nueva Andalucía with padel courts next door.

What is driving it

  • Spain's digital-nomad visa and the growing number of international employers allowing remote work.
  • Fibre coverage that now reaches most urbanisations, including the hills of Benahavís.
  • Flight connectivity from Málaga airport to more than a hundred European cities.

Where people are settling

Málaga's city centre attracts younger workers who want to live without a car. Families lean towards San Pedro and Estepona for schools and space. Founders and senior remote staff gravitate to Marbella, where coworking memberships increasingly bundle gym, pool and event access.

Local business groups say the next step is more flexible medium-term rentals, which remain the biggest friction point for new arrivals.
